Relatives include the widespread duckweed, skunk cabbage, calla lily and Jack-in-the-pulpit. During the primary stage, carrion beetles drawn by the stench of dying and human-like body temperatures, creep contained in the vase-like construction and unknowingly deposit pollen on the receptive female flowers. During the second stage, the structure begins to collapse, the "fragrance" fades and the bugs start to head out. As they go away, the beetles rub up in opposition to the pollen within the male flowers and are now prepared to hold the pollen to a close-by feminine flower. Only a handful of those unusual Indonesian plants bloom annually at public gardens worldwide. SDBG is the only identified garden in the area that grows this exotic species.
